Once part of a traditional island adobe in Fira, this 120 square meter villa takes up three caves originally used both for storing products and as a donkey barn, and is offered together with a big enclosed yard in front, just a step away from the cobbled streets of the village. Comfortably hosting five guests, its two bedrooms and bathrooms, open-plan common space and steam room amalgamated beautifully in the end of the biggest cave, make up for a secluded wonder world. Preserving its habitants’ privacy, the walled yard features a lounge area for sunbathing, a protected vaulted pool and an exterior staircase decorated with local vegetation, which leads to the terrace where a hot tub and a dining area with a view over the volcano awaits. While the outer shell of the edifice has been preserved, smoothly integrating with its surroundings, the interior experiments with the design possibilities of the existing spaces, thereby placing an emphasis on the caves’ sculptural, primitive nature and smooth, random curves. Cement mortar finishing, contemporary furniture, neon and black metal lights, and colored transparent glass touches contradict the mild, subtle floor plan bestowing the YARD residence with a spark of uniqueness.
